Writing Prompt: Heartbreak Turned Blessing
Pain sometimes clears the path for something better.
Ya know, there’s nothing quite like getting invited to your boyfriend’s wedding, particularly if you’re not the bride.
And yeah, we were both seeing other people, but we were still connected.
He was marrying the girl he was always going to marry. His high school sweetheart. Both families pushed for the match. She was socially acceptable. Think of the movie Arthur. I was Linda Marola, she was Susan Johnson.
And life ain’t like the movies.
They’ve been married for over forty years. Two girls who are now young women.
We’ve stayed in touch. We’re friends. And over the years I’ve come to realize that if we had gotten married, I’d be in jail for murder.
The man knew how to push my buttons.
I can love him as a friend and be very glad I dodged a bullet.
I would not have done well as a suburban wife and mom.
I also would not have traveled to all the places I’ve been; I wouldn’t have done half the things I’ve done.
Paths split. Choices are made. Sometimes you don’t get to make the choice. You end up going in an entirely different direction.
If you’re very lucky, you end up exactly where you’re supposed to be.
